The story reminisces along with Theodore Turner, now an old man, the token Bachelor among his friends. Among his memories is the girl he left at the St. Louis train station as he was leaving to go to war. Theo and Lilly exchanged letters for five years till the war was over. Lilly was waiting at the station when Theo arrived with an engagement ring in hand. But Lilly hid in the shadows and did not reveal herself. Theo was heart broken. He always thought he’d find her and had never married.
Fifty years later, Theo recognizes her handwriting on a menu board out side a restaurant in a rural New Mexico town. He is confused to find that the handwriting belongs to a younger woman, Lizzie.
Lizzie recognizes Theo. Sixty years ago as Lilly, she loved him.
